Challenge

The goal of this project is to design a dedicated page on the university website to showcase the case studies of students who have worked with profit and non-profit organizations to grow their brand awareness. The purpose of this page is to provide a platform for students to showcase their achievements and share their experiences with the wider university community, as well as to promote the work of the organizations they collaborated with. The project involves designing a streamlined process for collecting and reviewing case studies from students and organizations and presenting them in a user-friendly format that allows visitors to easily browse and search through the case studies. The ultimate objective of the project is to improve the visibility of student successes and promote a culture of sharing and learning within the university, while also highlighting the impact of the university's partnerships with organizations in the wider community.

Research Plan

To inform the design of the student case study page, we conducted the following research activities:

User Research:

The research for this project focused on understanding the user needs and preferences for browsing and interacting with the student case studies. The goal of the research was to inform the design of a dedicated page on the university website to showcase these case studies.

The research approach included a combination of user surveys and interviews with students, faculty members, and university staff. The survey was distributed to a random sample of university students to understand their preferences and expectations for browsing and interacting with student case studies on a website. The interviews were conducted with a subset of survey respondents, as well as faculty members and university staff, to gain deeper insights into their needs and goals for the case studies page.

The key findings from the research included a preference for a clean and organized layout that allows for easy browsing and a summary of each of the case studies before entering. Users also expressed a desire for the page to include additional information about the organizations involved and the impact of the projects.

Based on these findings, we developed a streamlined and user-friendly format that allows visitors to easily browse and search through the case studies. The final design includes a clean and organized layout with summaries of each case study on the main page and additional information about the organizations and projects. The design also incorporates social media links to connect with the students and accessibility features to ensure that all users can easily access and interact with the content.

Goals:

Based on the research findings, we identified the following key design goals for the student case study page:

  1. Provide a clear and intuitive navigation to help users easily find and access the case studies.

  2. Showcase the case studies in a visually engaging and easy-to-browse format.

  3. Highlight the key achievements and outcomes of the case studies to showcase the impact of the university's programs.

  4. Provide Social Media handles of the team that worked on the project for users to engage with them.

User Persona

By creating the user persona I can gain a deeper understanding of our target users, here the students who are interested in learning about the experiences of other students who had an opportunity to work with organizations in their program. By creating a detailed user persona, I can identify their needs, goals, and pain points, which will help us design a webpage that is tailored to their specific needs and preferences.

Strategy

User Journey Map

The user journey map for our case study page helps us understand the entire user experience, from the point where a user lands on the page to the point where they complete their tasks and leave the page. This map will help us identify any pain points, obstacles, or areas of confusion that users might experience while interacting with our case study page. It will also help us identify opportunities to enhance the user experience by streamlining certain steps, providing more guidance or support, and adding additional features or functionality.

By mapping out the user journey, we can better understand the user's mindset, behaviors, and emotions at each step of the journey. This information will help us design a page that is intuitive, easy to use, and relevant to the user's needs and goals.

User Flow

Designing based on the user journey map, I mapped user flows whose scenarios correspond to the established tasks. The decision trees were added for me to think through what actions users would take based on their feelings about the website. Below is the user flow for the Our Work page which represents the decision of the students who are here to read case studies.

Design

WireFrame

After creating a UI Requirement Document with a to-do list for designing the key screens identified, I started sketching low-fidelity pages. It enables me to examine my ideas before putting everything in the daunting process of digitizing.

Mid-Fidelity Wireframes and Prototype

Creating mid-fidelity wireframes and prototypes allows me to quickly iterate on my ideas and test them with users before investing too much time and resources in high-fidelity designs.
Mid-fidelity wireframes provide a clear idea of the overall layout and functionality of a design without getting bogged down in details like colors and images.

Final Thoughts

In this project, I was responsible for conducting user research, creating user personas, and mapping out the user journey. Based on the insights gathered from the research, I developed mid-fidelity wireframes for the Our Work page and the individual case study page. The team used these wireframes as a foundation to create the final design, which successfully met the project's high-level requirements. I am proud of the work my team has accomplished. The experience has taught me the importance of user research in creating effective designs and the value of collaboration in the design process.
