What-to-Watch is an app that saves users' time by providing personalized recommendations based on their preferences, favorite movies or shows, and streaming service.
It also generates recommendations for users to watch alone or with a partner or friend based on the two profiles' preferences.

CHALLENGE

With an ever-growing number of streaming services and content available, users can feel overwhelmed and indecisive when trying to choose what to watch. This can lead to frustration and a waste of time scrolling through endless options.

LET'S SOLVE THE 3 BIG QUESTIONS

WHY this App?

When Alone: As for confusion when choosing what to watch, a survey conducted by Hub Research found that 49% of respondents reported feeling overwhelmed by the number of choices available on streaming platforms.

With a Partner: This confusion worsens if you are accompanied by a partner. According to a study by Hanrahan et al. (2021), searching for "what to watch with your partner" on Google can lead to a flood of listicles and articles recommending popular TV shows and movies. However, these recommendations are not personalized to the viewer's preferences. As a result, some viewers may end up feeling even more confused and overwhelmed by the plethora of options

A study by TiVo found that the average viewer spends 7.4 minutes which is, Forty-five hours per year, searching for content to watch on streaming services, indicating that many people struggle to make a decision.

WHAT this App does?

The What-to-Watch App serves as the ultimate streaming guide, providing personalized recommendations to help users find their favorite TV shows without wasting any time. It starts by collecting data from the users and generates a personalized list tailored specifically to the user's preferences. This list includes information on which streaming services the shows can be found on. Additionally, the app goes beyond individual recommendations by suggesting shows that the users and their partners might enjoy together. It even offers the option to invite their partner for a movie plan, enhancing the shared entertainment experience

HOW the App does it?

After installing, the app begins by asking the user to input their preferences, and then it curates shows and movies for the users in the Home section.

The Search section helps users discover new shows by genre, streaming service, category, and region. It expedites the search process by presenting the user's favorite actors and genres at the top of the search page.

Users can plan a movie with their partners by comparing the available days and their choices of genre. The app generates a recommended list for both profiles, and it also allows users to view other profiles to see their suggested shows/movies.

By going through multiple iterations, we prioritized the core elements of the App. We also created a rapid paper prototype to test the usability of the site structure
